In this story:

Are the Washington Commanders really considering a trade of Chase Young?

That can be a viable thought.

Is Washington considering what would amount to a "trade dump'' of the former No. 2 overall pick?

Whomever is in charge of the franchise when we wake up tomorrow (not Dan Snyder!) had better be smarter than that.

While it is true that Washington - after doing long-term deals with D-linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne - now must navigate through a financial squeeze with due-for-deal D-linemen Montez Sweat and Young - trading the latter player at a time when he is not exactly a "hot commodity'' would be roster-building suicide.

There is an obvious upside to Young, though it's been buried as he has essentially missed the last two seasons due to injury. But this is a superstar talent, and if the rights to him are to be "sold,'' they shouldn't be "sold low.''

And that's what would happen right now.

NFLAnalysis asks and answers, "What could a trade between the Colts and Commanders look like? The Colts could offer a 2023 fifth-round pick, a conditional 2024 second-round pick and center Ryan Kelly in exchange for Young and a 2023 sixth-round pick.''

So in other words, a conditional second-rounder and a solid starting offensive lineman. That's a giveaway.

Washington isn't yet in a "cut bait'' situation with Young. If the Commanders really are destined to move him, the league needs to see him healthy and successful. And given the fact that he can be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, should he soon get "healthy and successful," you know what Washington should do with him then?

Re-sign him.
