The Washington Commanders are heading into the locker room trailing 14-9 against the New York Giants at FedEx Field.

While the pass rush was strong to begin the game, recording a franchise record five sacks in a quarter, the Commanders couldn't capitalize.

The first two drives ended in turnovers for the Commanders. The first came on an interception by Howell on a deep shot to receiver Dyami Brown. The second drive ended after veteran tight end Logan Thomas near midfield. The Giants were able to capitalize on the Commanders' mistake by scoring on a 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tommy DeVito to running back Saquon Barkley.

The Commanders marched down the field on the ensuing drive inside the 5-yard line, but Washington couldn't muster any red zone offense. The Commanders settled for a field goal.

In the second quarter, DeVito launched another long touchdown, this time a 40-yarder to veteran receiver Darius Slayton that extended their lead to 14-3.

The Commanders had a chance to score at the end of the half with a six-minute drive from Sam Howell, and he ran the ball in for an 8-yard touchdown. However, after the play was over, Commanders receiver Curtis Samuel and Giants defensive back Cor'Dale Flott were ejected after a fight.

Washington was a heavy favorite coming into the game, but it is falling victim to a New York squad hungry for a win. The Commanders need to show more resolve and play mistake-free football if they want to come back and win this game.

The Commanders will get the ball back when the two teams return to the field for the second half.
