Cowboys Compare Dak 'Heart & Soul' To Tom Brady

No, Prescott is unlikely to win seven Super Bowls. Yes, Prescott - the Cowboys believe - is Brady-like because he is the sort of person who can change the culture of a locker room and beyond.

FRISCO - If we are talking strictly about the "heart and soul'' department, we get the comparison.

"We have the closest thing in the National Football League to Tom Brady at quarterback now. That's what we have. Because Dak Prescott has the ability to do what Tom does, and he has the leadership like Tom," Irvin said on Stephen A's World on ESPN, meaning "the Dallas Cowboys'' when he said "we.''

"Dak Prescott, his leadership, and how these guys follow him, was well worth him becoming the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.''

The Cowboys on Wednesday made official their four-year, $160 million deal with Prescott, and at the press conference here at The Star, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones issued a similar comparison.

"Well, you want him in your foxhole, No. 1,'' Jones said. "He just checks every box in these key categories of leadership, (he has) this insatiable appetite to want to be the best, to outwork everybody. ... It's totally unfair to compare him to somebody like this, but, obviously, Tom Brady has that. He's just a fiery competitor... a winner and a leader. (He has) an insatiable appetite to be great."

Critics will scoff at the comparison in terms of on-field success; Stephen A. Smith certainly did, noting that Brady has seven Super Bowl titles. But that scoffing ignored what Irvin and Jones are saying.

No, Prescott is unlikely to win seven Super Bowls.

Yes, Prescott - they believe - is the sort of person who can change the culture of a locker room and beyond.

"You got to make sure and measure, and account for these things,'' said Irvin of leadership qualities - which by the way, both Jerry and Stephen Jones mentioned by comparing Dak to Irvin himself, a three-time Super Bowl winner and now a Cowboys representative in the Hall of Fame. "These are important things. You saw what they were like without him last year. I'm talking about the leadership he gives - that's where he's most like Tom Brady. ... the heart and soul of a football team."
