Slow Ride: What's Cowboys Inaction on Contracts Mean for Free Agency Signings?

The Dallas Cowboys have a host of decisions to make this offseason, with the looming contract situation involving Dak Prescott being front and center.

The Dallas Cowboys know that time is running out to win with this roster. After three consecutive 12-5 win seasons, the franchise has failed spectacularly in each playoff game.

Now, with push coming to shove as the contractual situations of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons looming large, the Cowboys have set themselves up in an either/or hell.

By waiting on those three, they might have eliminated themselves from being big players in the free agency market this offseason.

Yes, we know. Dallas is not known for making big-name moves in recent times. But this felt like the offseason that the Cowboys might put it all on the credit card and go "all in," as Jerry Jones has now infamously stated given the backlash and heat that came on the franchise after the Green Bay Packers loss in the playoffs.

That could still happen. But the more time goes on, the more that looks unrealistic and with big contracts coming up on the horizon, will that mean that Dallas will once again be bargain shopping in free agency?

That's a sound bet. ... and for critics, it means more questions are raised about how much Dallas and Jerry want to win that elusive Super Bowl.

After three straight playoff exits in horror circumstances, Cowboys Nation has seen enough and wants their franchise to swing for the fences in free agency in a bid to get over the playoff hump.

Running backs Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry? Players will star quality and big price tags at linebacker and receiver and defensive tackle?

Adding more firepower along the defensive line with a player like Indianapolis' Grover Stewart seems high on the list of needs. Stewart fits the bill, just as others do at other spots.

The Cowboys are entering a highly pressurized offseason and with Mike McCarthy the lame-duck coach and Dak's future beyond 2024 murky at best, the want to get the most out of this current roster with big additions seems to be lacking - due in part to the top-of-the-market contracts that are coming down the pipeline. ... while Dallas plays it sloooooow.
