Cowboys New TE Luke Schoonmaker: ‘I'm Through The Roof!'

The Dallas Cowboys finally got their tight end, taking Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker in the second round and he's ecstatic about being a Cowboy.

The Dallas Cowboys were thought to be wanting a tight end in this year's draft. After taking Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith in the first round, the Cowboys returned to the Wolverines well and selected Luke Schoonmaker.

In a move aimed at finding an all-purpose helper, Schoonmaker just might possess all the right tools to be a viable option in both the pass and run game for Dallas.

So … How does he feel about being a Cowboy?

"I'm through the roof," Schoonmaker said on 105.3 The Fan's draft show.

The 6-5, 250-pound tight end totaled 418 yards and three touchdowns last season, and while those states don't jump off the page, Schoonmaker's physical attributes - including his 4.6 40 time - will be his biggest calling card.

He is a viable option in the run game as a blocker, coupled with his versatility, and he can be moved around all over the field to help create mismatches.

With Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson on the roster, Dallas now has three young tight ends, all of whom have different strengths to bring to the Cowboys' offense.

Due to his athletic profile (ranked fifth among tight ends at the scouting combine per NFL.com), Schoonmaker has the innate ability to sink into soft spots in the zone, hopefully making throws relatively easy for Dak Prescott.

But despite all of that, it might be his effectiveness in the run game where his true value lies. His explosiveness off the line could cause defenses all kinds of problems.

With a clear want to be more powerful in the run game on offense, Dallas added Schoonmaker to complement Ferguson and Hendershot, who aren't quite the blocker the Michigan tight end might be.

Many wanted Darnell Washington out of Georgia, but Schoonmaker doesn't have that injury history.

Now, does he really have the attributes to eventually outshine “Fergushot”? We’ll soon find out if his ability is as “through the roof” as his emotions are.
