Tony Pollard Projection: Monster Year for Cowboys RB?

The bar is set high for Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard in his first year as the lead back.

Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard is facing regression, recovery, and the burden of expectations after a breakout 2022 season. Fans can rest assured knowing at least one projection still has him headed to the moon.

Pollard’s efficiency and athleticism have catapulted him to stardom. His 193 attempts, 1,007 yards, and nine rushing touchdowns were all career bests last season. With workhorse Ezekiel Elliott out of the picture, a significant portion of the team’s rushes are now vacant.

Pro Football Focus’ fantasy projections have him taking advantage of his newfound opportunity. They have Pollard in line for 1,293 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He is also expected to maintain his presence in the passing game with 47 receptions, 364 yards, and an additional two scores.

With new weapons like Brandin Cooks and Luke Schoonmaker in the fold, the Cowboys can expect to improve offensively. Their turnover luck should improve, too, meaning more meaningful touches for Pollard.

"Whatever they throw at me, I can handle it," Pollard told us at Cowboys training camp when asked about his offseason leg rehab. "I'm ready to go. … If they call it, I'm gonna haul it."

A big year for the Memphis product may also get him paid. Pollard signed the $10.091 million franchise tag this offseason, so he is once again on an expiring deal.

Perhaps Dallas - which won’t explode Pollard or Dak Prescott in Saturday’s preseason game at Seattle - will stray away from another heavy running back contract, but he would not be without suitors. Pollard has taken fewer hits than most backs of his age and offers legitimate value on third down. Some team will pull the trigger.

Pollard is not only projected to perform. He is projected to stay healthy. Doing so could set the Cowboys offense up for success deep into the 2023 season.
