ARLINGTON - Just as every once in a while a blind squirrel finds a nut, there can be times when a know-nothing shock-jock provocateur, in an effort to incite, actually speaks an accidental truth.

And Dallas Cowboys critic Stephen A. Smith just blindly stumbled upon a nut.

During his "First Take'' appearance on ESPN this week, Smith discussed the Dak Prescott era in Dallas and put a seemingly harsh label on it.

"It's a failure!" Smith hooted ... with his usual bellicose attempt to draw a rise (and a ratings point) out of Cowboys Nation.

Unbeknownst to Smith, however - because he truly knows little about "the Cowboys era'' and would surely be hard-pressed to rattle off the names of very many of Prescott's teammates - Smith is, relatively speaking, correct.

And moreover, Dak Prescott himself essentially agrees with that analysis!

Said Dak recently: “Nobody wants to end this drought more than the guys in this locker room. I can promise you that.”

It's simply factual, and revealed in Prescott's framing of "this drought'': The Cowboys, with many great expectations during Dak's seven years in Dallas, have yet to advance past the divisional round of the playoffs. Prescott and the Cowboys have achieved some wonderful things, on and off the field ... but they've also only won two playoff games in the seven seasons that he's been the quarterback.

That, relative to the goal ... is indeed a "failure.'' But ...

This is where the "know-nothing shock-jock provocateur'' (all of 'em, not just the comedically entertaining Smith) miss the mark: Also a "failure'' is Josh Allen in Buffalo, Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, Tua in Miami, Justin Herbert in Los Angeles, Geno Smith in Seattle, Kurt Cousins in Minnesota, Derek Carr in New Orleans and - if we're talking about winning the Super Bowl - so are Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia and Joe Burrow in Cincinnati.

They are all "failures'' if they're aiming for the thing Dallas and Dak are aiming for. Stephen A. Smith, though, is focused on one team. And he does have that, at least, in common with Prescott ... because that's what Dak is focused on as well.
