As expected, the Dallas Cowboys have promoted offensive assistant Scott Tolzien to quarterbacks coach. Tolzien replaces Doug Nussmeier, who packed up his things with former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to head to California to join the Los Angeles Chargers.

Also moving up: Per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas is promoting assistant O-line coach Jeff Blasko to the position of running backs coach.

Both have roots with the Packers and coach Mike McCarthy.

Tolzien joined the Cowboys when McCarthy arrived in 2020, as the two had spent time together when Tolzien was a backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers.

Tolzien played in just 10 career games and made four career starts, splitting two seasons apiece with the Packers and Indianapolis Colts. But despite throwing just two career touchdowns compared to nine interceptions, his new hands-on role with Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott could be beneficial.

While Tolzien already has experience with helping coach Prescott on offense, the staffing change could be a direct move to help get the juices flowing for the franchise quarterback.

For the Cowboys, maybe this change can pay dividends for them in the future and as soon as next season, especially considering how turnover-happy Prescott was this past year.

Despite missing five games due to injury, he finished with a league-leading 15 interceptions, more than he had in the two seasons combined. Prescott played only five games in 2020 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury, but this 2022 number is still concerning.

Tolzien now has a whole offseason ahead to continue building chemistry with Prescott as Dallas heads into the 2023 campaign.
