Cowboys Trade Idea: Ask Aaron Rodgers for WR Denzel Mims of Jets?

The Cowboys had interest in New York Jets receiver Denzel Mims, but the deal fell through. Now with Aaron Rodgers wanting a host of new receivers, could Dallas return to the former Baylor star?

The Dallas Cowboys made several moves on Day 3 of the NFL free agency period. 

They said goodbye to Ezekiel Elliott after seven years of service and restructured the contracts of DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyron Smith. Add to the flip of the switch on other contracts of Dak Prescott, Zack Martin, and Michael Gallup, the Cowboys freed up $45 million in cap space (all of which is in the process of being used, of course).

Time to go shopping? 

A splash signing is what Cowboy Nation craves, but what about returning for New York Jets receiver Denzel Mims, a Fall 2022 Dallas target, as CowboysSI.com was first to report at the time?

With "GM'' Aaron Rodgers on his way to New York and bringing his wish list of receivers that includes Allen Lazard (already signed) and a host of others, Mims could be on the outer even more than last season (he missed the first six games after requesting a trade).

Mims played just 11 games last year and totaled 186 receiving yards on 11 receptions. With other receiver options being added, the 6-3, 207-pound receiver could be a valuable and cost-effective get.

While not the splash signing of DeAndre Hopkins or Odell Beckham Jr., Mims could be a shrewd get for Dallas. The tall, strong receiver from Baylor can also fly down the field (he ran a 4.38 at the Combine in Indianapolis in 2020).

The term "un-tapped potential'' springs to mind when talking about Mims. In three of his four years in college, Mims grabbed eight or more receiving touchdowns.

His final season for Baylor saw him total 1,020 yards on 66 catches and 12 touchdowns. But that production hasn't translated into the NFL.

If the Cowboys weren't interested, his contract situation would surely make their ears prick up. Mims is in the last year of his rookie deal and is set to make just $1.3 million in 2023, per spotrac.com. That'll work.

The price tag for acquiring Mims last year was, as we reported exclusively at the time, was a fifth-round pick that could elevate to a fourth, which the Cowboys seemed unwilling to part with.

But what about now? Dallas could add Mims - seperate, of course, from also trying to get Hopkins or Beckham Jr. or Jerry Jeudy or Brandin Cooks or whomever - to its ranks ... to get Dak Prescott more consistent weapons.

With solid work having been done in Dallas free agency, the Cowboys have an estimated $22 million in cap room, and maybe that's earmarked for a big deal. But adding a receiver with potential and who is cost-effective could be helpful, too, in addition to the value of getting that "playmaker with juice.''
