The Latest on the Terron Armstead Injury

The Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl left tackle was injured on the first play of team periods in a joint practice with the Houston Texans

HOUSTON — The news on Miami Dolphins tackle Terron Armstead was a lot better early Thursday evening than it was earlier in the day.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport indicated on social media that the injury to Armstead's right leg would require no surgery.

That was accompanied by an update from Armstead himself, who explained what happened and expressed his determination to be ready for the season opener against the L.A. Chargers at SoFI Stadium on Sept. 10.

THE SCARY SCENE

Armstead sustained an injury to his left leg on the first play of 11-on-11 work in the second joint practice against the Houston Texans and walked slowly to a table between two of the three fields at the Houston Methodist Training Center. He sat on the table for several minutes before eventually leaving the field on a cart.

After practice, Armstead posted a video of himself walking inside the training facility and expressing his thanks for the support he got once news of his injury made the rounds.

NFL Network reporter Cameron Wolfe later provided some potentially great news when he revealed that Armstead had texted him to tell him the injury wasn't serious.

Armstead was seen on crutches as he boarded a cart just outside the training facility after the second of two joint practices with the Texans.

QUICK INJURY

The injury happened after Raheem Mostert carried to the ball to the left side of the Dolphins formation on the first play of team drills.

Armstead was on the ground after the play was whistled dead and clearly was in discomfort as he got up, with his body language showing some clear frustration.

He barely put any weight on his right leg as he walked to the table, then put no weight at all when he got into the cart to take him inside the facility.

ARMSTEAD'S SUMMER

Armstead spoke to reporters after practice Wednesday, indicating that he wasn't quite where he wanted to be physically but that he was ready to start ramping up his work.

It has been very unusual for him to do team period on consecutive days, so it was noteworthy that he was taking the first snap of 11-on-11s on this day.

'Armstead, who played through various injuries last season after joining the Dolphins as an unrestricted free agent, began training camp on the Active/PUP list after undergoing a minor knee procedure in the offseason.

"I’m still getting ready," Armstead said Wednesday. "I don’t feel like I’m fully ready yet for the regular season, but we don’t have a game yet. Still working through that process. Trying to get more reps to get more game-ready and get my body feeling optimal. Just get it as good as possible to go out and play some ball.”

Armstead has been among the best left tackles in the NFL for a few years now, but he's still looking for a first season where he can play every single game.

Whether he still has a shot at that goal after Thursday will depend on the severity on his latest injury, though there's probably more reason to be optimistic after practice than there was when he got hurt.
