Trey Moore began to establish himself as an impact player on this young Miami Dolphins defense. He was listed as a first-stringer on the depth chart , which shows he was having strong outings at practice. Out of the many rookies on the team, Moore was definitely heading toward the right direction to become a starter by the first week of the season.

In the game Saturday against the New York Giants, Moore looked to continue to build on the momentum. On the first drive for New York, Moore pressured Jameis Winston, causing an incompletion in the process. Unfortunately, Moore landed awkwardly on his left leg and was down in pain for quite some time.

Moore was unable to put any weight on his injured leg and was eventually carted off the field. While the severity of the injury wasn't known Saturday night, Moore being out could have a ripple effect on this Miami defense in the event that he misses a significant amount of time.

Losing versatility at the linebacker position

When speaking about Moore, head coach Jeff Hafley praised his versatility when it came to lining up and playing multiple positions on defense.

In the first preseason game against the Washington Commanders, Moore was relentless when it came to stopping the run and did a great job at the point of attack to ensure no big gains were made.

Moore was also playing man coverage on some downs, testing his skillset in multiple areas on the field, and he looked comfortable in taking on that challenge.

The multitude of ways Moore was being moved around the field, combined with the trust Hafley had in him to execute in different scenarios was very impressive, regardless of it being only the preseason.

A big question mark on who will step into that role

Looking at the landscape of the roster, it's honestly a huge question mark who will step in for Moore.

The player who finished behind Moore on the first depth chart was Willie Gay Jr. In the previous season, Gay was in a very limited role, playing in 131 total snaps. In comparison, to highlight how little Gay saw the field, Jordyn Brooks logged a total of 985 defensive snaps.

Defensive coordinator Sean Duggan had praise for Gay, who has great energy, but mentioned how he needs to execute the call that is made.

An example of why Duggan made that point was on the Devin Singletary touchdown, where Gay failed to keep contain on a play that ended in a walk- in-the-park touchdown for the Giants.

Another player who is not a guarantee to make the 53-man roster and who had a solid outing today in a very forgettable game was Jackson Woodard. Outside of recovering a gifted fumble from Tyrone Tracy Jr., he had a very good tackle in space on a screen and stuffed a run for no gain.

Woodard signed with the Dolphins in December of last season and is looking to keep his Miami tenure last even longer.

Making a strong final impression in the preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons will be huge for Woodard, especially knowing that Moore is now dealing with an injury.

In a season where you can experiment with a few players in certain positions given the circumstances, it stings that Moore suffered an injury with the regular season now less than three weeks away.

With that being said, injuries are always a part of the game. On top Moore going down, Hafley also announced Ronnie Harrison Jr. also left the game with an injury, adding another player hurt in the linebacker room. Two other prominent linebackers, Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson, already were dealing with injuries.

The best-case scenario is that Moore's injury does not keep him sidelined for a major period of time. But Miami could have a decision to make at the linebacker spot with this new development.
