Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Stetson Bennett on Eagles radar?

With Gardner Minshew expected to reach free agency on March 15, Philly should be in the market for another passer, whether that's in draft, post-draft, or free agency

In this story:

Howie Roseman said earlier this week that the Eagles aren’t in the market for a quarterback, at least in the first-round market.

That didn’t stop Philly's GM from reportedly conducting an interview with UCLA passer Dorian Thompson-Robinson on Friday as quarterbacks began to prepare for their on-field work on Saturday in Indianapolis at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Maybe the later rounds, though that could even be a stretch since the general manager and his staff are scheduled to make just six picks and will sit on their hands for a very long time on Day 3.

Without selections in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, the Eagles will have to wait until the seventh round, where they will have two picks. That, of course, is barring any unforeseen magic Roseman has up his sleeve to acquire another pick or two as he tries to leverage the most out of his situation.

Maybe a QB is in the cards at that point.

Or perhaps an undrafted free agent will be brought in like they did with Nevada’s Carson Strong last year. The Eagles could also go the free-agent route with someone like Jacoby Brissett or Marcus Mariota.

Strong was never fully healthy, didn’t play in the preseason, and was released. He was in Indy this week throwing passes to receivers and defensive players during the NFL Scouting Combine, no doubt trying to find a job.

With Gardner Minshew expected to reach free agency when the new league year begins on March 15, the Eagles only have two quarterbacks under contract – Jalen Hurts and Ian Book.

Thompson-Robinson has a wealth of experience at the college level with 49 games played, 88 touchdowns to 36 interceptions with a completion percentage of 63.3.

His skill set matches up with Hurts, especially in the run game.

Thompson-Robinson has 600-plus yards rushing the past two seasons, including 645 yards last year with 12 rush TDs. He had 28 career rushing touchdowns at UCLA.

Another potential option for the Eagles, especially given their recent love affair with players from the University of Georgia, is Stetson Bennett.

At 5-11, Bennett is pegged as an NFL backup despite winning back-to-back national championships with the Bulldogs.

Bennett spent Friday explaining his recent arrest for public intoxication in Dallas on the same weekend that players were arriving at the Senior Bowl, which Bennett did not attend.

"It was a mistake that everybody's aware of," Bennett said at NFL Scouting Combine. "I understand why that can't happen. I've talked to coaches about it, talked to GMs. Apologized to my family. That's who I feel worst about. I felt like I let them down because no matter where I go now - and even without all of this - I've got an obligation.

“I'm the fourth (Bennett named Stetson). Can't do that if your last name is Bennett, and I know better."

Stetson certainly has enough big-game experience to warrant being drafted late on Day 3, but he also may not get picked and sign somewhere as an undrafted free agent.

Would he be happy being a backup?

"As far my job, my obligation to the team that I'm drafted to, to be the best player for that, to learn, to play football and at the end of the day I've never been a wave-causer or anything like that,” he said.

“I keep my head down. I play ball. And so, whatever's asked of me is what's asked of me. My job, when I get there, regardless, you've got to be the best player to play. And I know there's more to that probably here, but at the end of the day, that's all you can control. So, that's what I'll do."
