Falcons Making Moves, Sign former Minnesota Vikings Tight End

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA - The Atlanta Falcons have been busy this week making roster moves as they fine-tune their 90-man training camp roster ahead of their clash on Friday night with the Denver Broncos.

On Monday, they announced they had activated offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor and signed edge rusher Cameron Sample and running back Trey Sermon.

They announced another move on Tuesday morning with the signing of former Minnesota Vikings tight end Nick Muse. In a pair of corresponding moves, they waived undrafted free agent wide receiver Le'Meke Brockington and linebacker Malik Verdon.

Muse was originally a seventh-round selection by the Vikings in the 2022 NFL Draft from the South Carolina Gamecocks. Muse spent three years in Columbia and had his best season in 2020 with 30 catches for 425 yards and a touchdown.

He played 16 games with the Vikings in three years, mostly on special teams. He had one catch for 22 yards in 2023.

He's spent the last year playing the roster shuffle on several teams' practice squads, including the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, and LA Rams.

New head coach Kevin Stefanski has expressed interest in playing some three-tight-end sets on offense, and Atlanta has three tight ends that appear to be locks to make the roster in Kyle Pitts Sr., Austin Hooper, and Charlie Woerner. Joshua Simon and Jack Velling are the only other tight ends at training camp, and neither of them appears to definitively warrant a spot on the 53.

More likely, the Falcons could keep two tight ends on the practice squad and take turns using game-day elevations if they want to add a fourth tight end for games.

Brockington was signed by the Falcons as an undrafted free agent, but he wasn't able to separate himself from the crowd to try and make the Falcons' roster as a fifth or sixth receiver, if they decide to keep six.

Drake London, Jahan Dotson, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Zachariah Branch are all but locks to make the team. Chris Blair has been the best receiver outside of that quartet, and his special teams contributions may help determine if he can beat out Dylan Drummond and/or Cash Jones for a 5th spot. Jones looks like he could be the guy if the Falcons keep six. He has versatility to play slot receiver, running back, and help special teams.

The new-look Falcons play on Friday night in their first preseason action against the Denver Broncos. Roster cutdowns happen on August 30th, and players like Muse, Simon, and Velling are all on the bubble to make the initial 53.
