Drew Lock Reveals What His Opportunity is with Giants

Lock said that he was told before signing with the Giants that Daniel Jones would be the starter.

New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock put to rest any conspiracy theories about the immediate future of the team's starting quarterback.

"Daniel Jones is the starter of this team, and that's been conveyed to me," Lock told reporters during his introductory video conference call on Friday.

The question was raised after Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider mentioned that Lock was sold on the opportunity to sign with the Giants because he'd have a chance at competing for the starting job with incumbent Daniel Jones.

"Now I need to come in and push Daniel to do the best he can be," Lock added. "That's the role that I've played for Geno (Smith). That's the role that I played for Teddy (Bridgewater). That's the role that Brett Rypien played for me when I was a starter in Denver. I've had both sides of this. I've been the guy to push a starter, and I've been the starter that's being pushed by the backups. It's all about making that room as, as best it can be."

Schneider, appearing on Thursday's Wyman and Bob show, said that the Giants "basically sold him the opportunity to compete, to be a starter. And he felt like it was the right opportunity."

But it appears now that Schneider's words might have been more of his opinion than anything gleaned from Lock.

"I called him after I made the decision to come here, and I just wanted to say thank you for the opportunities that they gave me there," Lock said, denying that the topic of replicating what Baker Mayfield did in Tampa Bay to rise as their starter ever came up. "That's where it really got left. I just said, 'Thank you' one more time. He said, 'Hey, you were great for us, and we appreciate everything you did for us.' That's all the words that I had for him in that conversation."

Lock said his focus is on doing whatever he can to help the Giants win.

"Everybody in this league wants to play as much as they can," he said. I'm looking at it as I'm joining a great football team, you know. I want to help this team in any way I can and bring as many wins home to this program as we possibly can.

"Whether that's me helping me or me helping Daniel or me helping the backs, the whole line, whatever it may be. And I'm gonna do that for this team.
