New Report Further Clarifies Giants RB Saquon Barkley's Ankle Injury

Barkley apparently did suffer a high ankle sprain, though not one as bad as it could have been, per a new report.

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley's initial injury report was that of a regular sprained ankle, not the dreaded high ankle variety.

However, Barkley told Taylor Rooks of NFL on Prime that he has a high ankle sprain, though it's not as severe as it could have been.

Still, the news of Barkley having a high ankle sprain is somewhat unsettling, considering his history with the injury. The last time he had such an injury, he missed four games. Even after returning, Barkley was never quite himself in his first few games, leading to speculation about whether he rushed back to the field before he was ready.

Initial reports claimed that Barkley could miss up to three weeks (not games) with his latest injury. Given that the Giants have an 11-day break before their next game after the Thursday night meeting with the San Francisco 49ers, there was some optimism Barkley might be good to go against the Seattle Seahawks, who visit the Giants for a Monday night game on October 2.

However, a more realistic target was always the October 8 game at Miami, which would have put the timeline around three weeks.

The bottom line for Barkley, who is playing on a modified one-year franchise tag, is it will all depend on his rehab. The Giants don't have to file any injury reports until next Thursday, so Barkley has plenty of time to work on getting himself right.
