In this story:

The goal for the New York Giants in Week 2 of the preseason is simple: keep stacking up the good days.

That’s precisely what they did on Thursday when they participated in a joint practice against the Miami Dolphins in the sweltering Florida temperatures.

While no one was keeping score in the traditional sense of the word, the Giants had one of their best practices of the summer and, more importantly, got some quality work in as they eye a fast start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 of the regular season.

“We got a lot of good work done,” head coach John Harbaugh said of the joint practice. “I think we leave the practice a better team than when we came in. That was our goal.”

Harbaugh may have been talking about the entire team, but there are still things that the Giants need to figure out before the curtain rises on their 2026 season.

First and foremost, they have to figure out if they can get by with what they have on the defensive line. Last week in the preseason opener against the Vikings, the run defense picked up where it left off in 2025—and not in a good way.

While the unit sat DJ Reader, Shelby Harris, and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, the performance of the depth was most concerning and needs improvement moving forward.

Then there are the questions at cornerback. Paulson Adebo, Dru Phillips, and Greg Newsome II, all of whom missed last week due to injuries, returned to practice this week. Presumably, most, if not all of them, will play against Miami, and the Giants continue to sort out their depth chart at this all-important spot.

The Giants also have a chance to clarify their receiver depth chart. Malik Nabers and Malachi Fields are locked in. Darius Slayton also appears to be locked in, and Braxton Berrios and Dalen Cambre have made strong cases for roster spots this summer.

But what about Odell Beckham Jr.? Despite what some people think, Beckham has not locked up a roster spot just yet, though he continues to have a chance to do so since he’s expected to play in the remaining two preseason games to continue making his case.

The other question, as a result of the signing of running back Najee Harris, will be how the ground game rotation shakes out.

Harris, who surprised everyone by taking team reps in the joint practice against the Dolphins, is most similar to Cam Skattebo in terms of running style. Will he cut into Skattebo’s reps eventually, or is Devin Singletary the one who is in the most trouble roster-spot-wise?

There is a lot more to sort out—backup offensive line depth along the interior is another key area. It all continues to play out down in Miami Gardens starting at 4 p.m. ET.
