How Contract Negotiations Will Play Out Between the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk

The 49ers don't seem willing to change anything about their offense this year.

Every 49ers fans wants to know what's going to happen with Brandon Aiyuk this offseason.

Will the 49ers trade him, extend his contract or make him play out the final season of his rookie deal? Those are the three potential outcomes.

There are lots of reasonable arguments for why the 49ers should trade him: He'll be extremely expensive, they don't throw him the ball enough to justify the massive investment and their quarterback doesn't have the arm strength to fully take advantage of Aiyuk's ability as a deep threat

But the 49ers don't seem willing to change anything about their offense this year -- they've made it a point of pride to bring back all 11 starters, even though they scored just 22 points in five quarters in the Super Bowl.

So the draft will come in two weeks, and the 49ers probably will receive calls from teams that want to trade for Aiyuk. And I'm guessing the 49ers will answer those calls and listen to the offers. But I don't think the 49ers will trade him.

I'm guessing the contract negotiations will drag on all offseason and into training camp. And people will wonder if the 49ers will play hardball and force Aiyuk to play on the final year of his current deal. And on the first day the 49ers practice in pads, the 49ers will announce a five-year extension for Aiyuk.

That's how the 49ers generally do business. If they trade anyone, I expect they'll trade Deebo Samuel next year when he'll be 29. Doing so would free up more than $9 million in 2025.
