2023 QB Index: Trevor Lawrence Falls a Spot Before Week 3

Week 2 was far from Trevor Lawrence's best.
In a 17-9 loss that saw the Jacksonville Jaguars fail to score an offensive touchdown for the first time since Week 5 in 2022, Lawrence had his fair share of missed opportunities. He wasn't alone, but that is the standard that his excellent play over the last two years has set.
Lawrence finished the game 22-of-41 (53.7%) for 216 yards (5.3 yards per attempt), finishing with a passer rating 68.8 and being sacked four times.
“Every week you want to play your best, especially after the performance from our offense last Sunday. Definitely looking to play better than that," Lawrence said on Wednesday. "I think the emphasis every week is to try to get better, but especially after a game like that, you definitely want to get back on track and play well.”
“Just not executing. That’s a broad term, but I feel like anything comes down to as far as critical situations. Whether it’s redzone or third down or anything, I think it’s a lack of execution and different spots at different times. We all have to do better at executing and being ready for any look that could show up. That’s on us of just communicating, when we’re on the field, we all got to communicate better. We’re getting better, there’s things that we’ve improved on for sure, but we got to be better on third downs and in the redzone.”
As a result of the loss, Lawrence comes in ranked No. 6 in this week's QB Index from NFL.com. That is just one spot compared to last week, though he was leapt by Josh Allen.
"It’s too bad almost doesn’t count in football. If it did, Lawrence would’ve had a banner day against the Chiefs. Lawrence worked his tail off to try to create positive plays for Jacksonville against a relentless Kansas City defense, but the small details proved to be the difference between an upset win over the defending champs and a painful loss," NFL.com said.
"Lawrence had multiple opportunities (five, in one goal-to-go situation, in fact) to drop passes on target for touchdowns in this game and just narrowly missed by inches, forcing Jacksonville to settle for field goals in a low-scoring game. He also didn’t get a ton of help from his offensive line, which surrendered four sacks. He wasn’t perfect, but he certainly wasn’t terrible. He likely wants some throws back, though."
Here is where we will track Lawrence's rank in the QB Index each week:
Week 1: 7
Week 2: 5
Week 3: 6
