Calais Campbell on Leonard Fournette: 'I think he is a guy who knows what to say and when to say it.'

After a shaky 2018, Leonard Fournette is doing his best to be a leader in the locker room this season.

After a 2018 season where Leonard Fournette frequently came under fire, including being suspended for a game for violations of unsportsmanlike conduct after being ejected during a game against the Buffalo Bills, the Jacksonville Jaguar running back is on a different course in 2019. 

"(Leonard) is developing a lot. I think he is a guy who knows what to say and when to say it," Jaguars defensive lineman and captain Calais Campbell said in the locker room on Monday. This came a day after Fournette spoke to the team in the locker room following Sunday's 34-27 loss to the Caroline Panthers.  

"He is a guy that has been working hard to earn the respect of the guys in the locker room and he has been playing really well too, so that always helps," Campbell said. 

Fournette spoke to the Jaguars after his team showed a resilient effort for the second-straight week, fighting against double digit leads to pull themselves back into opportunities to win the games. 

"We came in here after the game and I called the team up, made sure nobody held their head down. We fought the whole game. No matter the mistakes we made, we could have capitalized on most of all of those things. We came back and fought. Can’t expect any more for this team," Fournette told reporters after the game. 

Fournette also told reporters that throughout the entire team, he has not seen someone give up during a game. Considering the adversity the team has faced in the last two weeks, this insight from a player speaks volumes. 

"As team I think we are fighting right now. As a team as a whole, nobody is giving up. Like I told the team, our third week in a row, I have seen a fight out of everybody. Despite the mistakes, that’s going to happen in game, it’s all about bouncing back," he said. 

While it is impressive that the Jaguars continue to show such resiliency, head couch Doug Marrone noted the obvious point on Monday that it would be better if the team did not make mistakes and put itself in the situations that create the deficits and needs for comebacks. 

"I mean, we’re all working hard. Like I told the team today, obviously, they’ve shown a resiliency about themselves, but, ‘Hey, listen, let’s go out there and let’s play. Let’s play to where we’re not always having to show that coming back-type of resiliency," he said.
