Jaguars cut Terrelle Pryor and three others, per reports

The Jacksonville Jaguars made some early cuts ahead of Saturday's cut down deadline, releasing four players on Friday per multiple reports.

Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, defensive lineman Datone Jones and defensive back Saivion Smith were released early Friday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Quarterback Alex McGough was also cut, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.

Pryor and Smith getting cut is ultimately unsurprising. Smith, a rookie undrafted free agent from Alabama, was never able to leapfrog cornerbacks Breon Borders and Tae Hayes. McGough should be a top candidate for the practice squad, but he was never going to unseat Gardner Minshew as the backup quarterback.

Meanwhile, Pryor came to Jacksonville with some hype but spent large portions of training camp and the preseason injured. The team thought he could bring them a size/speed combo they didn't previously have, but it just didn't work out that way.

Jones is the only cut out of the four that is a little surprising. Jones played deep into last night's preseason finale so maybe that should have been a sign that his time was short, but he was one of the team's most disruptive linemen all preseason. The numbers game seems to have done Jones in, and now even more pressure is going to be added to former first-round defensive tackle Taven Bryan to produce.
