Jaguars Not Awarded Compensatory Draft Picks for 13th Consecutive Year

The NFL announced that they have awarded 37 compensatory picks to 16 different teams, with none making their way to Duval County.
Compensatory picks are designated picks from rounds 3 to 7 usually awarded in the event of specific personnel changes, including the net loss of compensatory free agents, and/or the hiring of a minority employee as either a head coach or general manager with a different organization.
To assess the value of these picks the NFL’s operations page states that “compensatory free agents are determined by a proprietary formula, developed by the NFL Management Council, which considers a player’s salary, playing time and postseason honors.”
The Jaguars last compensatory pick was a sixth rounder (203rd overall) in the 2010 Draft. They would go on to select Scotty McGee, a defensive back from James Madison university.
To put into perspective just how long it’s been since the Jaguars had one of these picks, the New York Jets were actually a playoff team, spearheaded by a young Mark Sanchez, a dominant run game and an intimidating defense. Avatar was the top grossing film of the year, while Kesha’s hit single “Tik Tok” was taking the music world by storm.
Since the program's inception in 1994, the Jaguars have only received 19 total picks, among the fewest in the league in that span.
However, the team does hold nine draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, with two picks in the fourth and sixth round, and one pick each in rounds 1-3 and round 7. With the significant amount of capital at Jacksonville’s disposal, they are in an excellent position to bolster their roster with young talent in spite of missing out on extra picks.
