Should the Jaguars consider a reshuffling along the interior of the offensive line?

With left guard Andrew Norwell has struggling  at points this season, should the Jaguars place right guards A.J. Cann or Will Richardson on the left side? The answer is not as clear as some think, and we examine above. 

Norwell has been highly criticized throughout his 21-game tenure as a Jaguar, and for the most part the criticisms have been valid. He has been inconsistent as a run blocker, specifically as a pull blocker on power and toss plays, something which was one of his calling cards when he was an All-Pro guard for the Carolina Panthers. 

But more noticeably, and more detrimental to the Jaguars offense, has been Norwell's issues in pass protection. He often plays on his heels and does not have strong hands on contact, leading to his 6'6", 325-lb frame being easily pushed around by smaller players at times. 

This was the case against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday when defensive end Mario Addison was able to collpase the pocket was ease, pushing Norwell back several yards until he collided with quarterback Gardner Minshew. This led to a fumble which was returned for a 56-yard touchdown by Panthers defensive end Brian Burns.

But with Norwell's issues, is there even an option on the Jaguars offensive line depth chart to replace the maligned left guard? As of now it doesn't appear so, unless the Jaguars want to make a drastic change with one of their other starting guards.

Right guard A.J. Cann has started 64 games since being drafted in 2015, but all 64 have came on the right side. The body mechanics, angles and techniques are all vastly different on the right side compared to the left side, so asking Cann to switch to left guard for the first time in his NFL career would not be a guarantee to produce better results than the Jaguars have been getting out of Norwell. 

On the other hand, Will Richardson has technically played on the left side during his NFL career after starting at left tackle in the place of an injured Cam Robinson during the season's first two weeks. 

But Richardson has also noted to media that switching from right guard to left tackle and then finally back to right guard has been a difficult transition, for the reasons listed above. Richardson is a young and developing player and asking him to play his third different position in the last month could be more detrimental to his development than it would be positive for Jacksonville. 

So while the criticisms of Norwell's play are likely to remain, the best bet for the Jaguars right now is to ride the season out with their high-priced left guard. There simply aren't many other options.
