Which Jaguars roster spots could be in jeopardy during waiver wire claims?

As Jacksonville puts in waiver claims, which players could end up being cut in favor of outside help?

Cut-down day has come and gone in the NFL, and over 1,000 players found themselves without a team. Along with the rest of the league, the Jaguars trimmed their roster form 90 players to 53, but the initial 53-man roster is not set in stone by any means. 

Among some positions the Jaguars could look at are running back, tight end, wide receiver and safety. From the start of the league year until the end of week three, the Jaguars will hold the seventh spot for waiver claims. Any player cut who has less than four years experience is subject to waivers, while veterans who were released are free to sign with any team at any time.

So while the Jaguars look at potential targets on the waiver wire and among released veterans, who are some players on their current 53-man roster whose spots may end up in jeopardy? 

Wide receiver Keelan Cole: 

When the Jaguars have their entire receiving corps healthy, Cole figures to be the fifth man in the pecking order after falling hard last season. With preseason standout C.J. Board making the team and showing much more this preseason than Cole did at wideout, it appears Cole's best chance to stick with the team is as a special teams returner.

With Cole figuring to have a minor role in the offense, it would not be a surprise to see him become another cut due to the addition of a running back like Wendell Smallwood, or even if the Jaguars decide to bring in another receiver. Veterans like Pharoh Cooper are available who are better than Cole on special teams, and waiver candidates like Josh Doctson have a better chance to make an impact on the offense.

Safety Andrew Wingard: 

The Jaguars ended up keeping 10 defensive backs, and it depends on how you view Josh Robinson to determine if the team carried four safeties or five. Regardless, Robinson's positional versatility gives him an edge over Wingard, which could end up costing Wingard a roster spot if the Jaguars need flexibility. 

Wingard, like Robinson, made the team in place of players like C.J. Reavis because of his special teams contributions. With that said, if the Jaguars decide to add a running back, this could end up being one position they shorten up, and Wingard could barely fall behind Robinson due to his ability to only play safety. 

Defensive tackle Eli Ankou:

The Jaguars keeping both Ankou and rookie defensive tackle Dontavius Russell was a bit of a surprise. Ankou has several years in the Jaguars' system and has shown he can play in a reserve role, but he was largely outplayed by Russell this preseason. 

The Jaguars also have two other players outside of Russell and Ankou on the roster who can play nose tackle, making it a very crowded position. If the Jaguars need roster flexibility due to pickups, Ankou could become a cut victim due to a numbers game. 

Tight end Ben Koyack: 

Koyack made the Jaguars roster largely because of his experience with the team, and the fact that rookie Josh Oliver is still rehabbing from a hamstring injury. But Koyack is the least dynamic option in an already thin tight end group, and he went largely unnoticed with the reserves this preseason. 

If the Jaguars decide to upgrade their tight end group, which would not be a surprise by any definition, Koyack is the clear odd man out since Oliver, Geoff Swaim and James O'Shaughnessy all figure to have larger roles with the team.
