Jets Have ‘Zero Interest’ in Jamal Adams Reunion?
For those wondering whether the Seattle Seahawks recent release of former New York Jets safety Jamal Adams might result in a Meadowlands reunion, think again,
Based on a Tuesday afternoon report from SNY’s Connor Hughes, New York has "zero interest" in the veteran "despite social media rumblings that Adams wants to come back."
Therefore, it is safe to assume that those old “Adams No. 33” jerseys will not be making a fashion comeback in East Rutherford any time soon.
The Seahawks announced on Tuesday that they would be cutting the veteran as a cost-cutting measure. Adams, per ESPN was set to make a non-guaranteed $16.5 million in 2024 and count $26.9 million against the salary cap. ESPN’s Brady Henderson called those numbers "untenable amounts for a player who has been unable to stay on the field or get to the quarterback since his stellar Seattle debut in 2020."
Despite his recent struggles in the Emerald City, Adams was among the top players at his position during his tenure with the Jets. New York selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in only his second and third seasons. He was also a First-Team All-Pro selection in his third year.
With both sides unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension, the Jets traded Adams to the Seahawks in 2020. The Lewisville, Texan native thrived in his first two seasons with Seattle, earning a career high 9.5 sacks in 2020, and logging 87 tackles, five passes defensed and two interceptions in 2021.
However, injuries greatly reduced Adams’ time on the field form 2022-23, appearing in only one game in 2022 (quad injury) and nine games in 2023. He also found himself embroiled in controversy following a derogatory outburst aimed at unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant in the wake of suffering a concussion in Week 4. The LSU product was also criticized for some belittling remarks he made on social media regarding the wife of an NFL reporter.
With safeties Jordan Whitehead, Ashtyn Davis and Chuck Clark headed for free agency, New York will almost certainly address the position, either through the Draft or free agency. Though the Jets are widely expected to seek offensive line help with the No. 10 overall selection, they may look to trade up to fill a position of need with a promising, young option either on late Day 1 or Day 2.
Third-year free safety Tony Adams and second-year defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse are the only members of New York’s positional group signed for the upcoming season.
Though there was a previous history of success, the water passed under the bridge between Jamal Adams and the New York Jets appears to have become too tainted for purification this season.
