Kellen Mond to Work Out at the 49ers Local Pro Day

Mond still is only 24-years old, and the fact that the 49ers invited him to their Local Pro Day could suggest they liked him when he was coming out of college three years ago.

The 49ers have their local Pro Day today, which typically is a workout for draft-elligible players who went to high school or college in Northern California. This year, they've invited NFL quarterback Kellen Mond.

Mond was a third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. He grew up in Texas. went to Texas A&M, threw three passes his rookie year, completed two of them and then the Vikings waived him. In 2022, he spent one day on the Cleveland Browns practice squad before they released him. And in 2023, he spent most of the season on the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. So his career is hanging by a thread.

But Mond still is only 24-years old, and the fact that the 49ers invited him to their Local Pro Day could suggest they liked him when he was coming out of college three years ago. They may have even given him a mid-round draft grade. We know Chris Simms liked him, and Simms and Kyle Shanahan are close friends.

If Mond impresses the 49ers today, they could offer him a spot on their practice squad, or at least invite him to OTAs, minicamp and training camp so they can begin to develop another young quarterback and teach him Kyle Shanahan's playbook and offensive system. The other option is to draft a quarterback in a couple weeks, but that quarterback might be just as old as Mond and less talented, considering Mond was a third-round pick, has a strong arm and is mobile.

Let's see how Mond performs.
