Detroit Lions Have Fourth-Most Cap Space in NFL

Lions are in solid salary cap shape compared to the rest of the NFL.

The Detroit Lions currently have $23,721,793 in salary cap space available, which ranks fourth in the National Football League, according to overthecap.com

Heading into training camp, Detroit has three remaining rookies yet to sign, including Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch

Detroit's approach to free agency allowed the team to upgrade at the secondary position and even surprisingly found a way to sign safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, after inking Cam Sutton to a free agent contract.

The team currently has dead money costs of $18,690,639, as Jeff Okudah, DJ Chark and Michael Brockers represent the three largest costs.

General manager Brad Holmes and the front office has put the team in an advantageous position, should the team want to make one more splash this offseason.

According to several pundits, the Lions are an ideal landing spot for wideout DeAndre Hopkins, should he decide to look Detroit's way after being released by the Arizona Cardinals.

In a recent CBS Sports post identifying dark-hose candidates to land the veteran wideout, Detroit was at the top of the list.

"Why not go all-in this season? The Lions also have $23.7 million in cap space, which ranks fourth in the NFL," writes Jordan Dajani. "It appears Jared Goff has turned the corner as the Lions quarterback. He went 5-16-1 in his first 22 games with Detroit, but is 7-2 over his last nine games. The organization likes Goff, and should continue to find weapons to surround him with."

One offseason contract negotiation to watch out for is veteran Jared Goff, who could sign a long-term extension prior to the start of the season.

A reworked deal could aid Detroit's current cap situation in the short-term, prior to his cap number ballooning in future seasons.
