NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah Projects the 49ers to Draft Chop Robinson

Robinson is a terrific prospect and an outstanding athlete, so if the 49ers take him, they'd be getting a good player.

The 49ers can't have enough defensive linemen apparently.

Despite adding four new defensive linemen during free agency, NFL.com draft guru Daniel Jeremiah expects the 49ers to spend their first-round pick on Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson. The 49ers signed Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos to join Nick Bosa, but they love to have a deep rotation of pass rushers to keep players fresh," Jeremiah wrote. "Robinson has the best get-off in the class, and that’s the hallmark of a Kris Kocurek-coached defensive line.

Jeremiah is absolutely correct that the 49ers like to have a rotation of pass rushers and that they look for edge rushers who have great get-off. That's why they drafted Robert Beal Jr. in Round 5 last year.

But to draft a rotational edge rusher in Round 1 this year when the 49ers already have two starters at that position -- Nick Bosa and Leonard Floyd -- seems foolish. Barring injury, Robinson would hardly play his rookie season, and the 49ers can't afford to red-shirt their first-round pick this year. They haven't a first-rounder since 2021, plus they might be in the final year of their current Super Bowl window, so they need an impact player who can fill an immediate need.

To be fair, Robinson is a terrific prospect and an outstanding athlete, so if the 49ers take him, they'd be getting a good player. But other good players most likely will be available too, good players who fill actual needs.

I doubt the 49ers will draft Robinson.
