In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – In a seven-round mock draft for Pro Football Network, the Green Bay Packers traded back four spots and selected Minnesota safety Tyler Nubin with the 29th overall pick of the first round.

The Packers also gained third- and fourth-round picks in the 2025 draft, as part of Ian Cummings’ hypothetical trade.

Nubin is an every-situation safety with proven playmaking production.

Nubin had never played safety until he replaced Antoine Winfield at Minnesota in 2020. He is “incredibly violent,” Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said.

If the Packers were to select Nubin, he’d want No. 27.

The second-round picks were used on Rutgers cornerback Max Melton and Florida State running back Trey Benson, whom Cummings called “an explosive, relentless” runner with “crisp” receiving ability.

Melton is the younger brother of Packers receiver Bo Melton. Blessed with the same athleticism, he had eight interceptions and 21 passes defensed over his final three seasons.

“I believe my brother was the best Big Ten receiver in the conference, and I was just like, ‘OK, I want to be the best, I gotta go against the best,” Max Melton told 247 Sports. “Every one-on-one when we went team, I was trying to go against my brother.”

The third-round picks were spent on Maryland offensive tackle Delmar Glaze, a developmental prospect who must improve his run blocking, and North Carolina linebacker Cedric Gray.

Gray, who would fill the hole in the lineup with the switch to a 4-3 scheme, had 141 tackles, including 12 for losses, as a junior and 121 tackles, including five sacks and 11 for losses as a senior. He forced five fumbles during his final two seasons and intercepted five passes during his final three seasons.

The Day 3 choices were used on an edge defender/4-3 defensive end, a slot/safety, a couple offensive linemen, a receiver, a defensive tackle and another safety.

The first of those defensive backs is Oregon’s Evan Williams, who in 2023 played 290 snaps in the box, 271 snaps at free safety and 165 snaps in the slot during his lone season at the school. He spent his first four years at Fresno State, with 90 tackles and three interceptions in 2021.

A late invite to the Senior Bowl, Williams was voted the best “defensive specialist” by the opposing running backs and receivers.

“Show I have the capability to make plays against elite competition,” Williams said. “Felt like I’ve done that a lot this year and also my willingness to learn and be able to pick things up on the fly.”
