In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Power rankings during the NFL season provide a fun if irrelevant snapshot of how teams are playing at a specific point in time. Power rankings after the season are completely irrelevant; the only thing that matters is how teams fared in the playoffs.

Nonetheless, NFL.com’s Eric Edholm published his final NFL power rankings for the 2023 NFL season.

The Green Bay Packers, who reached the NFL’s version of the Elite Eight by advancing to the divisional round of the playoffs, finished ninth.

“The future appears bright,” Edholm wrote.

And for good reason, because the Packers appear to have another star quarterback with Jordan Love.

After a first half of the season defined by big mistakes in big situations, Love dominated down the stretch. From Week 11 against the Chargers through the wild-card romp over the Cowboys, Love completed 70.7 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and one interception, good for a passer rating of 116.6. In the process, he joined Drew Brees (2018) and Matt Ryan (2016 and 2017) as the only quarterbacks to throw for at least 2,400 yards with 21 touchdowns, zero or one interception, and a completion percentage of at least 70 percent over a nine-game span.

Love joined Hall of Famer Kurt Warner (1999) and sure-fire Hall of Famer Patrick Mahomes (2018) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with at least 4,000 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns in his first season with multiple starts.

Behind that brilliant stretch of play, the Packers recovered from 2-5 and 3-6 records and a late two-game losing streak to finish 9-8 and reach the playoffs.

“How can you not be excited about his potential, with the impossibly young and talented group of pass catchers at his disposal?” Edholm said.

The Packers have work to do to solidify their offensive line, and the defense – now under the supervision of Jeff Hafley – will once again be a big question mark, but the Packers will enter the 2024 season as prime Super Bowl contenders.

It’s an easy projection. The Kansas City Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl and finished No. 1 in Edholm’s rankings, lost at Lambeau Field in December. The San Francisco 49ers, who lost in the Super Bowl and finished No. 2 in the rankings, had to rally past Green Bay in the divisional round. Plus, the Packers scored late-season victories over the teams ranked fourth and sixth.
