Packers Ready for Hot Start to Training Camp

Rain potentially could interfere with fans’ ability to watch the first practice of Packers training camp on Wednesday.

In this story:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The heat is on the Green Bay Packers.

Literally.

It will be a steamy start to training camp when they are cheered onto Ray Nitschke Field by their fans for the first time on Wednesday. According to WBAY-TV in Green Bay, it will be a muggy 82 on Wednesday followed by a sweltering 92 on Thursday. The high for Friday’s closed practice is down to 83. With fans back in the bleachers on Saturday, it will be a pleasant 77.

Sunday is an off-day.

“The forecast for the start of Packers training camp looks tricky,” WBAY meteorologist Steve Beylon said on Tuesday. “That’s because I’m expecting a cluster of thunderstorms to move across the Fox Valley tomorrow morning. Green Bay will likely be on the edge of dealing with these storms. Any storms tomorrow morning may have downpours, small hail and gusty winds. Let’s hope these storms keep away from those player bike rides with the kiddos.”

The bad news for Wednesday’s first practice is rain could drive the team inside the Don Hutson Center so fans won’t get to watch. The good news, so long as the rain stays away, is the clouds will drive down a temperature that had been predicted to be much hotter earlier in the week.

“I’m thinking by late morning, it will be in the upper-half of the 70s,” Beylon said. “That’s not awfully hot but, boy, will it feel muggy. The humidity will make even the most-hardy railbirds sweat on those metal benches.”

Coach Matt LaFleur doesn’t mind some hot weather.

“I’m less concerned about the heat,” LaFleur said on Tuesday about the forecast and ongoing air-quality issues from the Canadian wildfires. “It’s going to be very important for our guys to make sure they stay hydrated and are doing whatever they can do so we don’t have anybody go out there and overheat.

“I know our training staff and (nutritionist) Adam Korzin will be all over our guys in terms of making sure their fueling and getting the proper hydration. But it’s part of training camp. You don’t want it easy on anybody. As far as the air quality, that’s something we can’t control. If it’s so bad that we have to go inside then we’ll adjust.”

Here are the dates for the training camp practices that are open to the public, along with the predicted weather from the 10-day forecast at WBAY.
