Roundtable: Grading Bryce Young Through His First Five NFL Starts

In this story:

Bryce Young has certainly had a difficult start to his NFL career, losing all five contests that he has started. It took a while before the staff felt comfortable pushing the ball down the field with him, but that concern is starting to wear off. At the bye, Young has completed 115-of-182 pass attempts for 967 yards and has tossed six touchdowns to just four interceptions.

Here's what our staff at All Panthers thinks of Young's first five starts.

Schuyler Callihan: B-

Early on, things didn't look so great for Bryce. Ball security was an issue and he looked a tad overwhelmed with his pre-snap responsibilities which we can blame on the coaching staff. Over the last few starts he's looked slightly more relaxed and more confident in his process. He's thrown some really beautiful passes in some tight windows despite having pressure in his face. Once he gets a healthy offensive line in front of him, he prove to be a quality starting quarterback in the NFL. The kid really hasn't had much of a chance, so give him some time.

Matt Alquiza: B-

He hasn’t been great, and he isn’t absolved of all of the problems the team has on offense. However, he is far from the biggest problem for the 2023 Panthers. He’s shown flashes of the accuracy, processing, and decision-making that made him so appealing coming out of the draft. If more of those come in the second half of the season that B- will be significantly higher.

Tyler Ball: B-

Overall, Bryce Young is growing each week and trying to learn from the mistakes made, which at the end of the day is all you can ask from any rookie. We might never be able to identify what has caused his slow start be it play-calling, schedule difficulty, or the surrounding pieces around him. He's starting to find his rhythm, particularly with Adam Thielen. The Panthers won’t have a winning season this year, but they should have some hope for him as a leader.
