Patriots vs. Eagles: LIVE Updates: New England Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short
The legend of Tom Brady will live forever not just in New England, but all around the NFL. His career has left at least two generations of Patriots fans with lifetime memories ... and hardware. When he departed Foxboro to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, Brady left behind six Super Bowl victories, nine conference championships and 16 division titles in 20 seasons.
And now, seven months after retiring from the league for a second time, and three years after leaving New England, fans finally have an opportunity to say goodbye. At a ribbon-cutting event debuting a "new" Gillette Stadium this week, owner Robert Kraft said the Patriots wanted to give Brady a proper farewell.
“I talked to him recently. He’s really excited and I’m excited,” Kraft said. “Our fans never really got a chance to say goodbye in a proper way, and we’re going to do something special and unique with him. We were privileged to have the greatest player in the history of the game. ... I think it’s kind of cool to say thank you to him.”
The Patriots are only 25-25 since Brady left, and haven't won a playoff game. With Brady, former assistant Matt Patricia and the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in Gillette Stadium, Bill Belichick and the Pats look to start their 2023 season with a victory.
1ST QUARTER
The Eagles receive the kickoff and, thanks to an offside penalty on Deatrich Wise, drove into New England territory.
With running back Rashaad Penny inactive, Philadelphia's Kenneth Gainwell carried four times for 26 yards and caught two passes. On a 3rd and 11, Jalen Hurts ran a quarterback draw for 14 yards to the Pats' 9-yard line.
The Patriots force a 32-yard field goal by Jake Elliot and he makes it to give the Eagles the lead with 7:42 left in the quarter.
