Rookie Jarrett Stidham may have won Patriots' backup QB role

Stidham played the rest of the game after Brady stepped out on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers. Not only did he get in before Brian Hoyer, but he also took all his snaps.

In 2017, Jacoby Brissett did not play during the third preseason matchup against the Detroit Lions. He would later be traded days later to the Indianapolis Colts for receiver, Phillip Dorsett.

Now in 2019, will Brian Hoyer, who did not play at all Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers, be sent packing like Brissett was two year ago?

While we do not know for sure if the Week 3 preseason game means the end for Hoyer, we do know that rookie Jarrett Stidham has played well enough to win a roster spot over him.

Stidham has impressed with great throws, great pocket awareness, and good play under pressure. Meanwhile, Hoyer only benefited from bad competition in Detroit and did not play well in Tennessee.

Everyone who has watched the three preseason games this season would say that Stidham has outplayed Hoyer. With Stidham's future seeming bright and Hoyer's time seemingly running out, it would be no surprise to see Stidham as the one and only guy behind Brady in 2019.

Cutting Hoyer would save the Patriots roughly $1.5 million this season. Trading him would save the team $3 million. And while it may be Hoyer who could hold down the fort for a few games, if need be this season, Stidham's future is so much brighter than Hoyer's.

While Hoyer has served the Patriots well during his tenure in New England, he might and should be the second veteran player to lose his job to a rookie this season, after Jake Bailey beat out Ryan Allen earlier this week for the starting punter job.

Time will tell if Week 3 of the preseason proved to be the last of Hoyer in a Patriots uniform, or if it was just a decision made based off the situation.
