Could Colts be prime landing spot for QB Brian Hoyer?

With Andrew Luck shockingly retiring Saturday night, former New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett is now the new face of the Indianapolis Colts franchise and the team will be looking for another quarterback to backup Brissett.

New England has rookie Jarrett Stidham, who has impressed immensely during camp and the preseason, which seemingly earned him a promotion in the team's Week 3 preseason game vs. the Carolina Panthers as Tom Brady's backup and the No. 2 quarterback on the team. Because of that, veteran Brian Hoyer is now on the roster bubble and may not make the team once the roster is shaved down to 53 men before the regular season begins. Cutting him is an option, but trading Hoyer to another organization seems more beneficial to the Patriots.

That's why Indianapolis seems like the perfect landing spot for Hoyer.

Before Saturday, the Colts arguably had the best reserve QB in the NFL in Brissett. 24 hours later, that label could be given to New England who have Hoyer and Stidham on their roster. Hoyer's experience and success in the NFL as a backup and starter is unmatched compared to some of the other unreliable player's at the position throughout the league. Though Indianapolis does still have Chad Kelly and Phillip Walker on their QB depth chart, those players on the roster bubbles with a week of preseason left and don't look like reliable emergency options in the case that Brissett goes down with an injury.

In an offense with quick reads and a short passing game, Hoyer fits the mold of what the Colts need in the post-Andrew Luck era. He has experience in a similar passing scheme from his time in New England, and can provide veteran leadership and experience to help Brissett as he now embarks on his new journey of being Indianapolis' starting quarterback on a team that is loaded with talent.

The asking price wouldn't be too hefty, but the value Hoyer would provide for the Colts would be invaluable.
