Patriots didn't waste time getting TE Eric Saubert involved

It's no secret that the New England Patriots are in need of a playmaker at the tight end position after the retirement of Rob Gronkowski, so combing the depth charts of other NFL teams is something they've tried to do in training camp to try and find a diamond in the rough. That is why the team traded a conditional seventh-round pick on Monday for tight end Eric Saubert, a young TE that could provide some athleticism to the position for the Patriots.

The expectation was that Saubert, like most newly-added players in New England, would be eased into the system and would earn reps steadily as he went along in the preseason.

Well, that didn't happen.

During a red zone 11-on-11 session at Tuesday's practice which involved shorts and shoulder pads for the players, Tom Brady found Saubert for a touchdown, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Though it may not seem like a big deal, the Patriots clearly want to find out quickly what they have in Saubert. Though his pre-draft profile knocked him for his lack of pass-catching ability, everyone knows that New England is the perfect place to change a narrative for a player. This is the ideal opportunity for the former Drake tight end to make a name for himself in the NFL.

If Saubert can be good enough to make the 53-man-roster, then he will be worth way more than the seventh-round pick the Patriots gave up for him in the trade.
