Tom Brady inadvertently gives advice to Josh Allen about play that knocked him out of Week 4 game

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has nearly seen it all in his 19-year career in the NFL. Big plays, epic comebacks, tough losses, and injuries. That's why he was able to have the perfect answer when the media asked him about the hit Josh Allen took that knocked him out of the 16-10 win for the Patriots in Week 4 over the Buffalo Bills.

During an interview with WEEI's "The Greg Hill Morning Show" Brady talked about a similar situation that he had been in when he tucked the ball and lugged his way down the field. It's not just a story though - it's great piece of advice.

“I had a play like that up in Buffalo." Brady said. "I remember the next day Coach Belichick said to me - I’ll never forget this - ‘Hey Brady, if you want to have a career in this league, when you’re running like that, you throw the ball away or slide.'"

Brady's story brings up a certain perspective that hasn't been thought about very much in the wake of the big hit Jonathan Jones had on Allen in Sunday's Patriots victory. What players, coaches, and fans should be asking: What could Josh Allen have done better to protect himself from a hit like that one?

If you watch the play, Allen had an opportunity to slide right before safety Duron Harmon engages him to make a tackle, which is immediately followed by Jones' hit. Allen chose not to do so, instead head forward with his head in front of his shoulders.

Allen didn't help himself, which is why there should not be as much criticism towards Jones, who didn't have much else a choice when he was trying to tackle a 6-foot-5, 240-pound QB rumbling downfield. NFL head of officiating Al Riveron double-down on the non-ejection call during the game, which further emphasizes that Allen could have done more to keep himself out of danger.
