Appreciation Shown for the Two Raiders O-Linemen

The Las Vegas Raiders have UCLA brethren up front that continue to impress.

The two University of California-Los Angeles alums on the offensive line were gems last season for the Las Vegas Raiders. Tackle Kolton Miller and center Andre James were recognized for the quality work they put in.

Miller, drafted in the first round in 2018, had a season to be proud of in 2023. The 28-year-old tackle was above average on the season, earning a 73.3 run-blocking grade and 79.3 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus. For context, PFF lists a 70 grade as "above average."

In games against stout defensive fronts like Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis, Miller had an average pass-blocking grade around 82. In those games, he allowed just two pressures and no sacks. According to PFF, Miller's mark of 16 QB pressures allowed was better than any tackle who played 700 snaps or more, all the more impressive given the fact that last season was Miller's worst since 2020, PFF grade-wise.

James, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019, had what could be considered a breakout season. In 2023, he finished ninth among all centers with an overall grade of 74.6 from PFF. For his draft class, no center who took part in 20% or more of pass-blocking snaps had a better season in 2023 than James' pass-blocking grade of 71.2.

Only New Orleans' Erik McCoy had a better run-blocking grade than James. As is the case with draft classes, hindsight is 20/20. Across the board, James' 2023 campaign was a continuation of the upward trend in his performance since earning the starting job in 2021.

James' continued improvement makes his new extension all the more sweet. At 26 years old (with a birthday in May), he has not even entered the physical prime for his position.

Miller and James are both stalwarts for an offensive line that ranked sixth in the league for pass-blocking efficiency and 14th in run-blocking. There is a plethora of talent in the upcoming draft the Raiders can use to bolster the line, too. Especially at guard.

However, one thing is for certain: the Raiders' retooled backfield and whoever will be at QB this coming season can feel confident with the two Bruins up front.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
