Former Firs Overall NFL Draft Pick Thinks Las Vegas Raiders Take Quarterback Round 1

Former No.1 overall NFL Draft pick quarterback David Carr thinks the Las Vegas Raiders will select a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Las Vegas Raiders enter the 2024 NFL Draft in a curious position.

The team has needs at several positions, including cornerback and offensive tackle, two positions often mocked to them at No. 13 overall in many mock drafts.

However, the quarterback position could also be an intriguing option for the Silver and Black. If the Raiders don’t feel confident in their current quarterback room of Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew, they could take one of the QBs left on the board when they’re on the clock.

It has been widely speculated that the first three—and potentially four—picks of the first round will be quarterbacks. The top three quarterbacks in the class are commonly considered to be USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. There is some debate about who the fourth quarterback is, but Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy has recently picked up steam in that department.

So, where does that leave the Raiders? They have two or three options that are still considered potential franchise quarterbacks. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., Oregon’s Bo Nix, and South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler have fallen in line behind the top four.

Former NFL quarterback David Carr, brother of former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, said on NFL Network last week he believes the Raiders will select a quarterback in the first round.

He first acknowledged his affection for Coach Antonio Pierce, saying he “doesn’t know how to coach speak.”

“You gotta move up,” he said. “You’re going to have to make something happen. So, he has a lot of trust in his front office in finding the right guy, and then also making the appropriate moves to get up there. But honestly, when you look at this thing, I really think that they’re going to have to get one a little bit higher than where they are. They’re going to have to identify who they want, what quarterback fits their system – obviously, we know who Davante [Adams] wants.”

“I think that that’s something you’re going to have to navigate also because he’s not a piece that you can move. That would be kind of ironic; you trade Davante to bring in Jayden Daniels, who he wants. I think that’s going to be really fun to see how this thing plays out.”

Carr believes if the Raiders stay put, Penix is the best option.

“I’m a big Penix fan,” he said. “I think that he’s essentially a JUGS machine. He hasn’t run a lot, but he jumped really well, he ran fast. I think that’s going to be the guy that if I was there and I’m picking No. 13, and Penix is floating around, he’s still there, looks like we can go up, move up a spot or two and grab him, I definitely would try.”

Carr went on to say the Raiders can gauge the locker room and see how they feel about taking a quarterback to determine whether or not they will.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
