The New Orleans Saints opened the last week of the preseason slate coming off a 34-0 shutout loss to the Los Angeles Rams with practice at their Metairie facility this afternoon.

It will also be the last week for the Saints to cut the 91-man roster to 53 players, with the leaguewide deadline going into effect Sunday at 5 p.m. CT. It is a critical week not only for the organization but also its players as they seek to prove they belong on the full roster.

The Saints participated in a light practice two days after a game to start the new week.

Here is a notebook of observations from throughout the day.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore announced that:

  • Tight end Oscar Delp was at practice, but he is dealing with a hamstring issue
  • Cornerback Rez’john Wright will have surgery on hip
  • Running back Ty Chandler has a knee problem,
  • Safety Lorenzo Styles was dealing with a calf issue.

Other than that, everything else remains the same.

Notable Rotation Observations

Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson both shared responsibilities with the combined second and third team, similar to last week.

At running back, Kendre Miller was the first running back to go after Travis Etienne in the rotation. Audric Estime returned to the practice field and he followed Miller.

New Kicker

The big news to start off the day was free agent kicker Daniel Carlson signing with New Orleans

Moore mentioned that he brought him because he was a veteran kicker who had a lot of success.

“Daniel's really a talented kicker," he shared. "He's had a lot of success in this league, and I feel like there's worthy opportunities there for a competition to get him involved here. We'll kick here in, two days on Wednesday."

Tanner Brown and Charlie Smyth have been battling it out for the starting job, but both have been inconsistent throughout training camp and both have missed at lest one field goal in two preseason games.

Zamir White Provides Much Needed Depth in RB Room

With all of the injuries in the running back room, the Saints made the movie to trade veteran linebacker Deion Jones to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for running back Zamir White on Sunday night.

White, who spent the previous four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, will be a key depth piece while New Orleans navigates Alvin Kamara’s knee injury that will cause him to miss the start of the regular season.

“Yeah, I think he's done a nice job in this league,” Moore said about White. "Going back to college as well, and just watching his preseason, I think this will be a smooth transition. This is really hard for a guy like him to hop in here, mid-week, and trying to give yourself as much of an opportunity from Friday. I feel like the transition will be pretty smooth as far as what he was being asked to do in the last few weeks."
