Former Seahawks QB Brock Huard Reveals Seattle's MVP

Seattle media personality Brock Huard still believes safety Jamal Adams is the hub of the Seahawks' defense.

The key to the Seattle Seahawks 2023 season isn't a new free agent or the new rookies, but rather an old face in his old position.

While former New York Giants safety Julian Love and Seattle's picks at 5th and 20th overall will certainly make an immediate impact, according to former Seahawks quarterback and long-time Emerald City media personality Brock Huard the most exciting aspect of the season will be the return of veteran Jamal Adams into being ... Jamal Adams.

While there has been some uncertainty about Adams' future in the wake of Love's signing and a slew of safeties seemingly being courted by Seattle the the lead-up to the NFL Draft, Huard still believes he is the defense's most important player.

During a recent edition of Brock and Salk on Seattle Sports, Huard explained the importance.

“Even at the end of last year, not as an excuse nor an explanation, but you did hear (Seahawks defensive coordinator) Clint Hurtt and those guys say, ‘Yeah, once we lost Jamal, we lost some of our playbook, we lost some of what we were going to do, that we had plans to do this season to adapt some of our scheme to be a little bit creative,'” Huard said. “And that was the one area not just in personnel – the Jimmies and the Joes – but the X’s and O’s last year. There just wasn’t a ton of creativity very often.”

Excited about a new defensive play-caller and a new scheme, Adams' 2021 ended before it really began when he suffered a torn quad muscle in the season opener against the Denver Broncos.

The main questions about Seattle's defense entering training camp will surround Adams' health and his position. The three-time All-Pro was at his best in 2020, when he set an NFL record with 9.5 sacks as a defensive back.

Though Love started every game last season for a Giants team that won a playoff game, Huard remains convinced Adams is the hub of Seattle's defense.

“The ability to be creative and use big nickel (a defensive formation with three safeties) and play Jamal down where Jamal is best," Huard explains. "And that really is a nickel linebacker in his feel for the run game and his ability to tackle near the line of scrimmage.”
