Seahawks Coach Ryan Grubb Reveals Early Impressions of QB Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks will be going forward with Geno Smith as their quarterback, and new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has offered his thoughts on the veteran.

It always felt like Geno Smith would return to the Seattle Seahawks for the 2024 season, and it's now turned into reality.

With an offense that is brimming with weapons, Smith couldn't quite replicate his 2022 form as Seattle missed the playoffs after seemingly being in a strong position earlier in the season with a 6-3 record.

There have been changes as a result and one is that Geno will have a new voice in his ear this season with Ryan Grubb arriving as the new offensive coordinator.

Grubb shared some early impressions of his new QB when speaking to the Seahawks media for the first time on Thursday.

“He's got good presence,” Grubb said. “I've been impressed with his decision making, I thought last year in 22 I think he led the league in completion percentage. I think that says a lot in this league when you talk about how hard those decisions are number one and then how tight the windows are. So to be productive at that level and be the best in the league at it I think says a lot.

"I think he pushed over 65% last year so it just shows that he's got the ability to be accurate and make good decisions, that's what ultimately you need a guy that can lead, be smart, tough and dependable and make good decisions. I think Geno is more than capable of doing that.”

In the eyes of some Seahawks fans, Smith isn't the one to take the team forward, but his return was the most logical choice given the current quarterback market.

Add to that, Smith has shown that he could operate Shane Waldron's offense at a high level, evidenced by his five game-winning drives and the 406 yards of total offense he put up against the Dallas Cowboys in the 41-35 in Week 13.

With Smith returning, Grubb is getting a veteran quarterback who has been named to back-to-back Pro Bowls while tossing 50 touchdowns to just 20 interceptions in the last two seasons.

While some point out the inconsistencies in Smith's game, the upside of Geno returning far outweighs the downside and now the likes of D.K. Metcalf, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Tyler Lockett, Kenneth Walker, Noah Fant, and Zach Charbonnet can push forward and aim for a better 2024.

Continuity is key in the NFL, and with Smith, the Seahawks have a good chance at bouncing back and making another playoff push next season.
