Seahawks 'Know Who (They) Are' After Lions Win, Says Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks bounced back from a poor Week 1 showing to stun the Detroit Lions at Ford Field, with Geno Smith crediting the team's resilience in the overtime win.

Talk about a perfect storm. The Seattle Seahawks came into Ford Field on Sunday to face a Detroit Lions team that was high on confidence after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.

But it was a storm that the Seahawks navigated well as they pulled out a 37-31 overtime win to move to 1-1. After the sour taste of the second half against the Los Angeles Rams lingered, Seattle knew a response was needed.

After the disappointment of Week 1, coming out with a win against a ferocious Lions team was something special for quarterback Geno Smith.

“You know what, I just feel like we came and we played to win," Smith said. "We know who we are as a team. We were looking forward to this opportunity. It’s hard to win in this league and sometimes we’re going to lose. Like I said, last week was last week. We got to put this game behind us real soon and get ready for our next opponent, so the reality is that we lost one game last week, but we followed it up and we’re a resilient bunch."

The win over Detroit gets Seattle's season rolling, and one positive aspect of the offense's performance was the efforts on third down.

After only going 2 of 9 against the Rams, the Seahawks fared a bit better this time, going 5 of 11 as the offense found ways to keep the chains moving.

For Smith, the offense as a whole performed at a high level, which led to an increased conversion rate against the Lions.

“Just overall execution and I really think that was important, especially on the road," Smith said. "The communication was great, phenomenal, you know, starts up front. It starts with the guys echoing the calls and it’s loud up there, so you got to pass it down the line. The receivers ran great routes, got open. I was able to find them. I had great protection all day and guys did a great job just converting those third downs.”

It would have pleased offensive coordinator Shane Waldron to no end to see his unit finally click after an up-and-down start to the season.

Next up for Seattle is a home clash against the Carolina Panthers where fans hope that the offense's growth and firepower will again be on show.
