Seahawks Rookie Devon Witherspoon Staying Humble Despite 1st-Round Status

Devon Witherspoon clearly made a solid first impression on the Seattle Seahawks, or they wouldn't have selected him at No. 5 overall. But he's looking to extend this impression to the football field, hoping to prove to the Seahawks that they were right in picking him.

Despite being the No. 5 overall pick, Seattle Seahawks rookie corner Devon Witherspoon knows that his game still has to speak for itself.

Though he was limited, he got his first chance to get an NFL feel during rookie minicamp on Friday and showed a humble approach while doing so. Despite being the name everyone in the organization is talking about already, he put an emphasis on making a strong first impression much like a undrafted free agent would.

“Everything is about making an impression," he said. "It’s the first time getting out here with the guys and coaches and being able to perform in front of them. Like you said, you can’t take your first impression back, so it’s everything.”

Especially when factoring in last season's elite draft haul, the Seahawks have been adamant on getting players that, while possessing immediately-impactful talent, also help maintain the proper level of maturity and professionalism that the Seahawks culture has generally been built upon.

Before even taking his first NFL snap, Witherspoon is already embodying these expectations knowing he's the face of the team's 2023 draft class.

And though their paths to this point have been different, this mirrors the approach of fellow cornerback Tariq Woolen. While tying the league lead in interceptions as a rookie, his quick rise to stardom last season never saw the fifth-round pick falter in his soft-spoken and and humble demeanor.

Knowing the kind of teammate he's joining in Woolen and the rest of the secondary, Witherspoon is excited for what's to come.

“It was a good feeling, just knowing who my teammates are in the cornerback room and how we are going to compete," Witherspoon said. "We are going to try to go out there and be the best us everyday we go out there, so it was really dope. I can’t wait until I get to work with him."
