Geno Smith Calls Seattle Seahawks 'One Of The Best Teams In Football'

The Seattle Seahawks are now in first place in the NFC West, and quarterback Geno Smith is fully buying into the team's hype.

The Seattle Seahawks always had high hopes for this season, but the past couple of weeks have provided a huge boost of encouragement.

Although they've looked shaky at times, the Seahawks sit at a comfortable 5-2 near the midpoint of the season. More importantly, the division-rival San Francisco 49ers have lost three straight games after starting the season 5-0, and now sit at 5-3 heading into their bye week. Suddenly, the Seahawks are now in sole possession of the NFC West lead.

With this development, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is all the way in on his team.

“If you look at our roster, player for player, I mean, I think we could match up with anybody ... So, yeah, if I go out there and play up to my standard, up to my capabilities, then we are one of the best teams in football," Smith told SI's Albert Breer after Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns. "We got the defense, we got the coaching, we got the offensive playmakers and we got to the line to do it, and our special teams are great.

“Just all across the board, man, we play great football.”

The Seahawks haven't looked particularly dominant this season, and some of their wins have come by the skin of their teeth. That includes Sunday's 24-20 win over Cleveland, in which Seattle needed a last-minute touchdown to pull out the victory. Still, the Seahawks found a way to win, and Smith believes that resiliency will come in handy come playoff time.

“We’re resilient, and we got the right coaches,” Smith said. “We got the right guys in the locker room. We got the right amount of leadership. We got everything we need to be successful, and, when the game is not going our way, nobody panics. Like I said, it’s a roller coaster. My job is not to ride that roller coaster.”

Smith has had an up-and-down season so far, passing for nine touchdowns and six interceptions in seven games. While that's been good enough to win so far, he'll have to be better for Seattle to reach its goals.

With the Seahawks facing a big road test against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Smith and the rest of the team will have to back his claims up.
