'It Was Just When': Seahawks DT Jarran Reed 'Always Knew' Reunion Possible
After five strong years together, the Seattle Seahawks parted ways with defensive tackle Jarran Reed in March of 2021.
But now, over two years later, Reed is back in Seattle, as the sides agreed on a contract that will keep him as a Seahawk through the 2024 season.
The initial split arose after the Seahawks approached Reed seeking to turn his base salary into a signing bonus in order to create more cap space - but Reed declined, instead pursuing a contract extension just a year after getting a new deal.
Seattle didn't like that approach, and Reed was ultimately released ... but he admitted there were "no hard feelings" and forever kept the idea of a reunion in mind.
“When I left, I always knew there was a possibility of coming back,” Reed said. “It was just when.”
Reed added that he had "no clue" the Seahawks were interested in him, but he received a call at the start of free agency and went from there. He feels his fit in defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt's scheme is "perfect" and anticipates having a similar role as he did during his previous stint.
A 2016 second-round pick out of Alabama, Reed logged 194 tackles, 22 sacks, 22 tackles for loss and 58 quarterback hits across 72 games, making 63 starts. He earned the starting nod in each of his final 60 games in Seattle.
Reed spent 2021 with the Kansas City Chiefs and 2022 with the Green Bay Packers, recording a combined 95 tackles, five sacks, seven tackles for loss and 26 quarterback hits.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have stressed the need to keep adding help on the defensive front, and the addition of Reed is certainly a step in the right direction.
In Reed's eyes, it was a situation of "when," not if, the reunion took place - and by all accounts, this appears to be a fine time for both parties.
