Seahawks Offense 'Can Be Better Than Last Year' With Jaxon Smith-Njigba

The Seattle Seahawks made some moves via the draft to acquire offensive talent, with NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe stating that Geno Smith's unit can be better than last year.

The Seattle Seahawks offense was a surprise packet last season. In the post-Russell Wilson era, many expected Seattle to struggle after going 6-8 in Wilson's last year with the team.

But with quarterback Geno Smith at the helm, things clicked almost immediately, as he took Seattle to a 9-8 record, threw for over 4,000 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions en route to a playoff appearance.

Now, with another offseason to prepare and the rookie additions of receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and running back Zach Charbonnet to what was the ninth-ranked offense last year (23.9 points per game), could Seattle move into the upper echelon of offenses? NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe thinks so.

“They can certainly be better than they were last year with a top 10 offense,” Wolfe said on NFL Total Access. “ ... Geno was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC last year. They have a great trio now of receivers, D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. They got him (Smith-Njigba) with the 20th pick and he’s going to be their slot guy Pete Carrol said. That makes them more dynamic as an offense. I really like how they’re building this Seahawks team.”

Adding Smith-Njigba to the receiving room will no doubt be beneficial. Metcalf (1,048 yards, six touchdowns and Lockett (1,033 yards, nine touchdowns) were Seattle's only consistent threats through the air. The next best "receiver" was tight end Noah Fant (486 yards).

With an offense that now has a true three-headed monster as Smith-Njigba totaled a 1,606-yard, nine-touchdown season for Ohio State in 2021. Coming off an injury that only saw him play three games last season for the Buckeyes, many will be watching to see if he can replicate that form for the Seahawks.

The running back room got a nice addition, with Charbonnet coming in to "battle" Kenneth Walker III. The Seahawks will have a good running back tandem to complement the receiving attack.

With two good pieces added to what was already arguably a top-10 offense, the Seahawks could have all the talent to be a top-five offense in the NFL next season. It just has to click.
