Seahawks QB Drew Lock Expected to Get 'Hard Looks' in Free Agency

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock filled in amicably for Geno Smith this season, but being a free agent, will the franchise bring him back?

The Seattle Seahawks were in the midst of a four-game losing streak as their once-promising season looked to be heading down the drain.

With Geno Smith struggling with injury, it was Drew Lock's time to shine. While Lock couldn't get a win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14, he came through in the following week against the Philadelphia Eagles, producing a superb 11-play, 92-yard touchdown drive that took just 1:24 off the clock to put the Seahawks ahead 20-17 and keep the season alive.

But now, as we head to the offseason, will Lock, who is a free agent, be returning in 2024?

NFL.com thinks that Lock could be getting interest from other teams ... and not just to be the backup.

"Lock's 2023 season can be distilled down to two truths: He entered a tight game and threw a pick that led to a loss to the Rams, and he delivered a heroic performance that produced a prime-time win over the Eagles, making him a lovable figure to the rest of the football world," NFL.com writes.

"Look, Lock's been through a lot in his NFL career, and most of his snaps leave plenty to be desired. But every once in a while, he flashes talent that keeps evaluators intrigued by his potential. Do I think he'll ever fully realize that potential? No. But we can bank on at least a couple of personnel chiefs taking a hard look at him and believing the passer can add value to the roster -- just not as a starter."

While Lock didn't see the field at all last season, he did manage some snaps this year, and was 1-1 as the starter.

Given that Lock's potential return to Seattle won't break the bank, his comeback could be a viable option for the franchise. After all, we have seen what teams look like without a capable backup quarterback (see New York Jets).

So Lock could see some interest coming his way over the next couple of months, but it does feel like he has a home with the Seahawks. While he might feel it could be best to remain in Seattle, that could also depend on the incoming head coach as well.

Several candidates' names are still being thrown around such as Dan Quinn, Mike Macdonald, and Ben Johnson, but the interview process is still ongoing. So whether or not either of those see Lock as a quality backup is anyone's guess.

Lock, in his limited game time this season showed his quality, but it remains to be seen if other teams see that as a need going forward.

If not, we imagine that Lock could be returning to Seattle to help solidify the quarterback room.
