Seahawks Considering Re-Signing Shelby Harris?

The Seattle Seahawks could still make an improvement to their defensive line by re-signing Shelby Harris.

A major goal for the Seattle Seahawks this offseason was to revamp their defensive line in a way more suited to the 3-4 scheme that coordinator Clint Hurtt put into place.

The remodeling upfront saw the Seahawks let go of veterans like Poona Ford, Al Woods and Quinton Jefferson without ever truly replacing the depth they once had. This is why it could make sense for Seattle to reach out to a familiar face in Shelby Harris, who is currently a free agent, about a possible return.

This possible return was recently discussed by The Seattle Times' writer Bob Condotta, who was asked about it by a fan in a recent mailbag.

“The defensive line — to reiterate — is the one position that the Seahawks appear sure to try to continue to address, though at this point, probably not until right around the time training camp begins, or maybe later,” Condotta writes. “So, I think it remains an option that Harris could re-sign. But for now, I also don’t know if it will happen.”

Up to this point, there has been nothing but good signs about the Seahawks' satisfaction with their defensive line that added veterans Dre'Mont Jones and Jarran Reed, along with drafting guys like Derick Hall and Mike Morris.

However, the decision not to spend one of their two first-round picks on the defensive line did draw criticism from Pro Football Focus. The advanced analytics site ranked the Seahawks' defensive line among the worst in the league at No. 30 overall.

After being a part of the blockbuster Russell Wilson trade last offseason, Harris went on to play 15 games for Seattle, totaling 44 tackles, five for a loss, two sacks, and six quarterback hits.

The eight-year veteran proved to be productive for the Seahawks last season, but any deal with Harris would likely have to be a cheap one, given Seattle's current cap situation.
