Chase Young Problem with Commanders; Trade Idea for Seahawks?

There's a lot of trade chatter regarding Washington Commanders defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young. Should the Seattle Seahawks get in on the chatter?

For too long, the Washington Commanders seemed paralyzed by indecision regarding defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young. But on Wednesday, the beleaguered organization made its decision on Young - and its not a positive one, as his fifth-year option will not be picked up.

Could the Seattle Seahawks take advantage by swooping in via a blockbuster trade?

As always, we want to frame this properly: This idea is a media proposal, not a proposal that has been exchanged between the two clubs. But having said that, there are some puzzle-piece fits here.

Young’s injury history has the Commanders openly questioning his future, and now he could end up going free after this season as Washington tries to juggle its finances, judge its talent and wonder if the Commanders are a contender ... or poised to try to again fill their cupboard with building-block assets.

Enter the Seattle Seahawks, who have the Nos. 5 and 20 picks in this draft - and who up-top have four picks in the first 52 slots. There is certainly one line of thinking that suggests Seattle should simply use some of those picks to bolster a defense that in 2023's playoff run was exposed as having too many front-seven holes.

But the other line of thinking? Save Washington from itself. Roll a small dice on Young’s health .. maybe even offer a trade contingent on him performing at a healthy level.

In short, try to "win the trade'' by taking advantage of a Washington team that is stuck between a rock and a hard place here ... and instantly inject star power in the defensive line of a Seattle franchise that would need to juggle its books a bit to make this happen short-term - and that would need to re-juggle in the future to retain the former first-round pick. But if you want "go-for-it'' mode from GM John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll? A call to Washington is a "go-for-it'' start.
