Rewarding the veteran rusher after a career year in his first season with the franchise, the Seattle Seahawks inked Uchenna Nwosu to a multi-year deal to secure a foundational piece of their defense for the foreseeable future.

Since taking over as general manager for the Seattle Seahawks, John Schneider has regularly signed star players to contract extensions before the start of or during the opening days of training camp.

With camp set to open at the VMAC on Wednesday, Schneider has struck again, this time locking up standout pass rusher Uchenna Nwosu through the 2026 season.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Seattle has agreed to terms with Nwosu on a three-year contract extension worth up to $59 million. The deal reportedly includes $32 million guaranteed.

Nwosu, 26, joined the Seahawks as a free agent prior to the 2022 season after spending his first four seasons with the Chargers. Immediately making a major impact in the team's new 3-4 scheme, the former second-round pick out of USC tied for the team lead with a career-high 9.5 sacks.

In addition, per Pro Football Focus, Nwosu excelled against the run as well, posting a career-high 12 tackles for loss and finishing second among edge defenders with 44 stops constituting failed plays for the offense.

Quickly turning Seattle's two-year, $19.05 million investment into one of Schneider's best moves, Nwosu finished with 62 pressures and also forced a trio of fumbles, including punching the ball out at the goal line to help defeat the Broncos in the season opener. After nearly hitting double digit sacks in 17 starts, he was named a Pro Bowl alternate, setting himself up for an even bigger pay day.

With Nwosu now under contract for the next four seasons, the Seahawks have him and recent second-round picks Boye Mafe and Derick Hall under club control through at least 2025, solidifying their pass rush long-term.

While full terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed, re-signing Nwosu likely will open up cap space at the perfect time for the Seahawks, who still have yet to sign top-five pick Devon Witherspoon or second-round pick Zach Charbonnet. The extra financial flexibility would expedite getting those rookie deals inked in the next couple of days to ensure they are the on the field for the opening practice.

On another positive note, lowering Nwosu's cap hit for 2023 opens the door for Seattle to bring back veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris or an outside free agent. The team currently has one open roster spot heading into camp and now may have enough wiggle room to sign an impact player at a key position of need.
